Thank you for inquiring about volunteering with Second Chance. Volunteering with Second Chance is a rewarding experience for both the volunteer and the animals. Any amount of time from an occasional few minutes to an hour a week will be greatly appreciated. Some typical jobs are listed below. Please be aware that there are always other jobs that need to be done in addition to the ones listed below.
Please note: If you are seeking to volunteer to fulfill work, school, church, court-ordered or other community service required hours, these should be completed at one of the Cause for Paws thrift stores.
Cat Care Volunteers:
are responsible for daily cat care in our Adoption Center which includes food and water, scooping litter boxes, sweeping rooms, cleaning cages, doing laundry, as well as playing with and socializing the cats.
Cat Care hours are 9-11 AM and 6:30- 8:30 PM during the week. On weekends, hours are from 9-11 AM and 4:30- 6:30 PM.
Foster Buddies and Dog Adoptathon Volunteers:
One of the great things about Second Chance is that all of our dogs and puppies are in foster care and are living in homes instead of kennels. However, they do need foster buddies. Buddies help our dog foster homes with handling dogs and puppies at adoptathon events and sometimes with transporting dogs to and from adoption events.
Transport Team:
help us by taking our cats to or from vet appointments. We may also request help taking our cats or dogs to adoptathons or special events.
Special Events/Fundraising Volunteers:
help during our fundraising events, including our annual Auction for the Animals, Fill the Truck events, Christmas gift wrapping events, Santa Paws, or other fundraisers during the year. We need set up/break down people, greeters, and people to help during the events in many different roles.
Candy Box Volunteers:
are responsible for stocking and collecting money from candy boxes that are located around the Triangle.
Telephone Volunteers:
help by picking up voicemails left on our phone lines and forwarding them to the appropriate people. This can be done from home.
Cat Adoptathon Volunteer includes the following:
Greeter - Welcome visitors to the Adoption Center and assist them with starting the adoption process. Greeters are essential to help ensure adoption events run smoothly.
Kitty Matchmaker - This job does require becoming familiar with the cats in our Adoption Center and their personalities. A matchmaker's job is to escort adoption applicants through our Adotpion Center to meet the cats and help them decide which cats are a good match for their family.
Cat Adoption Processors - Assist at adoptathons by filling out adoption contracts and paperwork, and reviewing the adoption agreements and veterinary records with new pet owners.
Cat Adoption Counselors - Review adoption applications to ensure our cats find wonderful, permanant homes with responsible pet owners. Assist applicants in determining which cats are the best matches for their home and family. Counselors must be at least 21 years old, Additional training is provided to those interested in this role.
Cat Foster Parent:
Second Chance volunteer foster homes provide the necessary socialization for all of our kittens and special needs adults. These homes are a very important part of our program and without them we would not be able to save as many cats as we do. Lack of foster homes is the primary reason there is a long wait period for those people who have cats on our wait list. In addition to affection, foster homes are required to provide basic care (regular food, clean water, clean litter, etc.) We provide their food, litter, and other necessary supplies along with all necessary medical care (spay/neuter, vaccinations, flea treatment, de-worming).
Dog Foster Parent:
Since Second Chance does not have any permanent dog facilities, volunteer foster homes provide the necessary shelter for all of our dogs. These homes are the most important part of our program and without them we could not save the animals we do. Lack of homes is the primary reason we turn dogs away every day. In addition to affection, foster homes are required to provide basic care for the dogs (clean water, shelter, etc.) We provide their food, Heartguard, Frontline, and other supplies along with all necessary medical care.
