Cheers to Our Champions: A New Year’s Note

The Promise of 2021

As the world seems to be taking one deep collective breath today, we at Second Chance Pet Adoptions wanted to extend our sincerest gratitude for your generous giving this holiday season. Because of your support, the next 12 months promise to bring hundreds upon hundreds of stray and abandoned cats and dogs the second chances they deserve.

Thanks to you, homeless animals will know love, and we are beyond grateful to be able to look forward to meeting all of the forever families that will give cats and dogs the lives they’re dreaming of today. The world offers them much to see, do, and enjoy, and with you in their corner, their wishes will come true.

We hope that 2021 will be as kind to each of you as you have been to animals in need. The year behind us showed us all who the heroes in our society are, and you, our friends, are among them. Thank you for your compassion, for your help, and for your words of encouragement as we work towards our mission of giving each and every cat and dog a home of their own.

Cheers,

Second Chance Pet Adoptions

Focusing on What Matters: Saving Odessa!

Odessa May Have Just One Eye, but She’s Looking Forward to the Future!

In early November, Second Chance met an underweight 6-pound chihuahua named Odessa in the Granville County animal shelter. At just 1 year old and sweet as could be, you might wonder how she ended up behind bars–and missing an eye.

Odessa lived with a family, and with several other dogs, in fact. But a good Samaritan, concerned about the well-being of the dogs, called in animal control officers to report neglect. The pack was in rough shape and all were removed from the home. Odessa in particular not only had on a too-tight collar, but she was also a one-eyed pup with an oozing left eye socket. It was apparent that her eye had not been surgically removed and that she had been missing it for some time.

While the animal control officers investigated Odessa’s former owners and prepared to press criminal charges, our volunteer, Tim, went out to the shelter to rescue Odessa. We moved her into foster care and arranged for her transport (through our Hearts to Home program) to New Jersey South Hills Pet Rescue. With the help of volunteers, she made her way north, leaving her abusers in the rearview mirror.

Odessa happily settled into her NJ foster home, where she had to wait only a short time to receive medical care for her eye socket. Before she even had surgery to permanently close it, Odessa had an adopter waiting to make her part of their loving family!

Because of our donors, we’ve been able to keep our eye on the prize throughout the challenges presented by the pandemic: give stray, abandoned, and abused animals a second chance.

Your donations enable our staff and volunteers to turn cats’ and dogs’ lives around. Odessa and her canine friends are safe now, but more like them are waiting for us in shelters every day.

Can you send a gift now so more animals can get the medical care and the forever families they deserve?

63 Animals are Forever Home for the Holidays!

This past November, we were able to find forever homes for 40 felines and 23 canines in our program! 🐶 😻 Of the forty felines, we sent eight bonded pairs home. 👯‍♂️

During one of our adoption visits, a couple came in to meet two cats – Obi and Seeley – to see which was the better fit for them. Though they fell in love with both, they ultimately chose to take Obi home. Once home and settled, they could not stop thinking about Seeley (and we have no doubt that Obi missed him too)! A couple of days later, they came back and adopted him too. We know Obi must have been excited to see his friend! Trust us, you can never have too many cats. 😉 Now, Seeley, Obi, and 38 other cats are forever home for the holidays. 🎄

We are also beyond thankful for the many canines that found their forever home this past November! 🍂 Twenty-three lucky dogs were taken home just in time for the holidays! Watch the video below to see their new forever families!

Because of YOU, 23 pups and 40 felines will be able to spend the rest of their lives in peace, love, and comfort. Thank you for your constant support! 💛 We could not do this work and find forever homes for these dogs, cats and kittens without the help of YOU. Our deepest gratitude is extended to our #GivingTuesday donors and fundraisers who kicked off giving season this week! If you’d still like to send your pawliday gift to animals in need, there’s no time like the present! 🎁 Use the “Donate” button below on this post, or visit to www.secondchancenc.org/sweets to make a donation!

#GivingTuesday Success: YOU Put a Smile on Animals’ Faces!

Second Chance animals have never had a better #GivingTuesday!

To say we appreciate your loving support would be a VAST understatement!

Today we’re giving major thanks to both our #GivingTuesday donors AND all who set up their own fundraising pages for the animals in our care! Because of you, animals like Wafer will get a second chance to know love! Check out this young tabby cat’s happy tail video or read her story below!

Last year, one-year-old Wafer spent the holidays out in the cold. As beloved family pets enjoyed the warmth provided by safe shelter and loving humans, Wafer’s best bet was to survive the winter in storm drains and bushes. As a stray in need of a second chance, this kitty luckily caught the eye of a good Samaritan who contacted Second Chance to see if we could help with a kitty whose arm “looked a little funny.”

Wafer arrived at our adoption center on Dec. 31, 2019 and rang in the new year with the promise of a new life. Upon assessing Wafer’s arm at intake, we had to agree it looked a little funny—it was frozen in place, held out from her body and bent at an angle. She had surely been injured long before so her arm had atrophied. Because of our generous donors, Wafer received high-quality medical care immediately.

Though the injury appeared to have happened long enough ago so as to no longer cause her any pain, her arm was entirely useless to her when it came to walking, running, playing, or climbing. Worse, in its permanent position protruding from her body, it was actually a hindrance and a risk: it could be bad news if her arm got caught on, or in, something. We amputated Wafer’s arm and, with youth on her side, she healed beautifully.

Injured and alone in December, healing and hoping in January, Wafer did soon get to celebrate one holiday in style: just before Valentine’s Day 2020, she found the love of her life. She met her match in Carson and went to her forever home on February 8, where she is safe and spoiled. Wafer–now Mia–doesn’t miss her arm at all; as you can see in the video above, she easily jumps, runs, and chases her tail!

We could not do this work without the help of our partners in rescue. Our deepest gratitude is extended to our #GivingTuesday donors and fundraisers who kicked off giving season yesterday! If you’d still like to send your pawliday gift to animals in need, there’s no time like the present!

Holly’s Rescue Anni-fur-sary: A #GivingTuesday Happy Tail

One Year Later: Holly’s New Life

Second Chance introduced you to Holly on #GivingTuesday last year. What’s she up to a year later? Living life to the fullest with her forever family, thanks to you! Let’s take a look back…

In November 2019, a good Samaritan spotted a few stray dogs and reached out to Second Chance Pet Adoptions for help. One was in especially bad shape — the 10-month-old hound we’d soon come to know as Holly was visibly emaciated even from a distance. Her back legs were nonfunctional, so she was dragging the lower half of her body along the coarse ground, scraping her belly, back legs, and tail on sticks, gravel, and dirt.

Once caught, Holly was rushed straight to a veterinarian, and predictably, the vet did not deliver the best of news about Holly’s condition. Her pelvis was fractured and the muscles in her back legs had atrophied. There was evidence of trauma along her spine, so our best guess was that Holly had likely been hit by a car more than a week before she was found. The severe hookworm infestation raging in her intestines had also left her anemic.

90÷anding and labor-intensive: lack of control over her bladder and bowels, paired with the assistance Holly needed for every step she took, was matched only by the demands of vet appointments and physical therapy. Upon her arrival at Second Chance, one look at Holly was all it took for our Assistant Treasurer, Carol, to convince her husband – our Board of Directors President, Dave – that Holly needed to come home with them and soak up all the TLC they had to offer. Over the course of several months, Holly worked her way through hydrotherapy, acupuncture, and other treatments that gave her some ability to walk, but she also got a slick pair of wheels so she could cruise more effortlessly!

Though Holly will always have medical challenges, Dave and Carol eventually leaned into what the rest of us all knew: Holly was home from day one. In August, they committed to “forever” and officially adopted Holly!

Because of our donors, Holly is happily home now, but more dogs (and cats!) still roam the streets, many of them injured and alone. To ensure we can be there for them when we get the call for help, Second Chance will be asking for your support on #GivingTuesday. Whether you donate, share our fundraising pages, create your own fundraising page, or tune in for our live stream that evening, there are several ways to partner with us on Dec. 1 to help animals in need!

Thankful & Thriving: Lorna’s Happy Tail

Because of You, Lorna is Thankful Today–And We Are, Too!

This was Lorna in July of 2017, when Second Chance Pet Adoptions rescued Lorna (and her four siblings) from a horrendous hoarding situation. Lorna and the rest of the kittens were filthy, sick, and deeply uncomfortable in their own hairless skin. Lorna was suffering from ringworm, eye and upper respiratory infections, and ear infections that we actually feared would be chronic, impacting her for the rest of her life, after what she went through at such a young age.

After months of rigorous medical treatment for her ailments, Lorna was adopted in April of 2018, but when her adopter needed to devote more time to caring for sick relatives, Lorna was returned to us in December of 2019. Though she had done nothing wrong, Lorna was left homeless–and confused–during what should have been a joyous holiday season.

Your generous support enables us to make a lifelong commitment to the animals who come through our doors seeking shelter, safety, and love. Because of our donors and our volunteers, we could take Lorna in again and get to work again on finding her new–her forever–family. In February of 2020, Victoria visited our adoption center and fell in love with Lorna and her purrsonality. Lorna has become a permanent and beloved member of Victoria’s family–a happy tail made pawsible thanks to you!

We give our deepest thanks to the Second Chance family that’s remained strong in the face of an incessantly difficult year: those who volunteer their time to help with intake, clinic nights, daily care, fostering, and transport; those who serve on our Board of Directors and play a vital role in helping us stretch every dollar through a pandemic; those who donate food, supplies, and funding for quality medical care; those who embrace adoption; those who sponsor us or our events or lend support through their business; and those who share the Second Chance mission with others, be it face-to-face or by following us on social media.

Today, and everyday, and especially this year, we are grateful for your continued support as we fight to bring joy into the lives of the animals we rescue. Because of you, many cats and dogs–homeless no longer–will be spending the holidays with their forever families in peace, comfort, and love.

62 animals treated to FOREVER HOMES in October!

Look at this meow-gical moment! ✨ In October of 2020, we sent 36 cats and kittens to their forever homes!
Of these 36 cats and kittens we sent…
👯‍♀️ six bonded pairs
+ three FIV+ cats
💛 2 senior cats
…to their forever homes! Thank you for your constant support. Without you, we wouldn’t be able to continue to save homeless or abandoned cats and dogs in our community. Are we pushing to send 40 cats home in November? 🦃 Let’s see if we can do it!
We’re also going mutts for our dog and puppy adoption numbers! 🎉 In October of 2020, we were able to send 26 dogs to their forever homes!
Three of the pups that went home, Drew, Gomez and Ginger Ale (not pictured), you may recognize as our WRAL VIPs (Very Important Pups)!
From left to right: Fuji, Drew, Gomez, Fred and Gingerale.
Drew, Gomez, Fred, Ginger Ale and Fuji were living in a storm drain on the side of a busy road in early August. The puppies ran into the storm drain to hide from their rescuers. With food and water laid out for the puppies, one came closer and closer over the course of 2 hours until he could be leashed and pulled from the drain, but as feral kiddos, the rest of the puppies were too shy to be enticed out of the pipes voluntarily. Determined to save these dogs from a life of wandering the streets, struggling to find food and water, risking illness and injury, and having more puppies themselves, the diligent rescuers crafted a 50-foot “drain snake” that they could push through the pipes to gently nudge the remaining babies out. Victory! They were immediately transported to Second Chance Pet Adoptions to be cleaned, fully vetted and socialized before adoption.
Now, these pups are socialized, loved and ready to go into their forever homes! This is the pupdate we were hoping for after their rescue, and we cannot thank you all enough for helping us get there!
