Petco Foundation Invests in Second Chance Pet Adoptions, Triangle’s Oldest No-Kill Rescue

Grant of $5,000 will extend efforts to rescue more cats in 2017

 

Second Chance Pet Adoptions—the area’s oldest no-kill animal rescue organization—has been selected by the Petco Foundation to receive a $5,000 grant for new feline housing in the Adoption Center. This is the second time the Petco Foundation has funded upgrades to the new Second Chance facility. In 2011, the Petco Foundation granted funding for new cat condos that increased our capacity to rescue more cats and made the cats housed within them more attractive to adopters.

 

Now, in 2017, Second Chance’s intake and adoption numbers will increase again thanks to the Petco Foundation’s partnership with us as we purchase even more housing—and improved housing—for the cats who are not able to live in our community rooms with other cats. The new housing will give cats more room to stretch their legs and play with their toys; will increase the visibility of our solitary cats; and will free up space in foster homes, as Second Chance will now be better able to host litters of kittens on-site at the Adoption Center and take in more cats overall.

 

At Second Chance, our ultimate goal is to save as many lives as possible, a goal shared by the Petco Foundation. Since Second Chance began, we have rescued over 12,000 animals. Even as we celebrate our 30th anniversary, we are looking to the future: we have set a goal of 525 adoptions in 2018 and are proud to report that in 2016, we sent 480 animals to their forever homes. This is in part thanks to the ongoing support we have received from the Petco Foundation and Petco in Cary.

Volunteers from the community and local businesses will wrap your gifts for a donation amount of your choice to support Second Chance Pet Adoption’s dog and cat rescue programs. All supplies are provided, many gift wrap designs, ribbons, bows, gift tags and gift boxes or bags – all you need to do is bring all your gifts and pick out what you would like us to use! “EVENING OF PAWSIBILITIES” AUCTION FOR THE ANIMALS: AUCTION ITEMS NOW UNVEILED!

On Saturday, September 17, Second Chance Pet Adoptions will hold its 16th annual “Evening of Pawsibilities” auction to benefit homeless cats and dogs at the North Ridge Country Club. For the first time ever, Second Chance is revealing about half of the auction items before the big event, and people can bid on (and win!) items online, whether they are able to attend the event or not. The first round of items—including a mountain bike, Disney World passes, art, jewelry, gift cards to local restaurants, and more—are unveiled now, with several more rounds between now and September 17. On September 17, the remaining half will be unveiled as well, and 100% of the silent auction items can be won by anyone with an internet connection. These items can be seen on the Second Chance BidPal website (https://bidpal.net/eveningofpawsibilities).

Guests who attend the gala will enjoy decadent dinner, desserts, and drinks; a wine pull; a photo booth; visiting with adorable, adoptable guests; and playing the raffle (prizes include a $500 Visa gift card, a Big Green Egg grill package worth over $900, and a $750 gift card to the Umstead Hotel and Spa). 2nd Annual Art Exhibition to Benefit Second Chance Pet Adoptions

The second annual “Art to the Rescue” benefit for Second Chance Pet Adoptions begins today! With more than 30 pieces of art from 20 well-known local artists and a new online viewing gallery with electronic bidding, art lovers will have an even better experience than last year.

Via the online gallery, art fanatics and animal enthusiasts can view the artwork, place bids, and even purchase pieces outright. Then, from June 25 to June 30, supporters can visit ArtSource Fine Art Gallery in North Hills (4421 Six Forks Rd., #123) to see the exhibition live. On June 30 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Second Chance and ArtSource will host a ticketed closing reception; tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door and include wine tickets. COMMUNITY RALLIES BEHIND RESCUE

RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA (February 4, 2016) – Members of the local community have rallied behind Merry, a rescue pulled from a local kill shelter in December by local animal rescue group, Second Chance Pet Adoptions. Merry was part of Second Chance Pet Adoptions’ “Christmas Challenge” to pull 10 dogs from high-kill shelters and find them homes before Christmas.

Merry was a stray who came in severely malnourished, and heartworm positive. After slowly gaining weight over several weeks, Merry’s foster mom noticed she was beginning to have difficulty breathing. It was discovered that Merry was severely anemic – and to everyone’s surprise – pregnant, and expected to give birth within 10 days. Because of Merry’s health, an emergency C-section provided the best opportunity for her survival, as well as the survival of the puppies.

Dr. Sullivan from Bayleaf Veterinary Hospital performed the emergency surgery on Merry, where she received a blood transfusion from a donor dog and gave birth to 9 puppies. Fortunately, Merry made it through the delivery, but remained very weak. Her red blood cell count continued to drop, and she was unable to produce enough milk to support the puppies. Second Chance staff made the decision to bring the puppies to the adoption center where they could be bottle fed and provided with round the clock care. Without a healthy mother, Merry’s puppies had a very rough start and two puppies did not survive. Staff and volunteers have been spending nights at the center – sleeping on the floor – to care for the remaining puppies.

During the recent snowstorm, the puppies were moved to the home of a volunteer with a wood stove and a generator in preparation for power loss. Volunteers continued to support the puppies and braved the elements to help with feedings, which needed to be done every 3 hours.

Over the past several weeks, Merry has been improving steadily and her red blood cell count has returned to normal. Christian
LeBron, Merry’s foster mom has been closely monitoring her progress and said, “Merry is such a sweet, loving dog. Every day she’s gained a little more bounce in her step. We are so happy that she’s doing well.”

The seven remaining puppies are all thriving and continue to grow stronger every day. Lisa Imhof, Director of Operations for Second Chance stated, “We are so grateful for the way our volunteers have rallied to help Merry and her puppies. They would likely not be here today without their support.”

Both Merry and her puppies will be available for adoption through Second Chance.

SECOND CHANCE PET ADOPTIONS’ BILLY THE BLIND KITTY RECEIVES GIFT OF SIGHT AND THE GIFT OF LIFE

Raleigh, North Carolina November 4, 2015

Second Chance Pet Adoptions announces that after one year, Billy, the Blind Kitty, is happy, healthy and can finally see, thanks to generous supporters and a grant from the ASPCA.
Billy was a 6 month old blind kitten, rescued from the local kill shelter in October 2014. His blindness, caused by mature cataracts, left him virtually unable to see, except for occasional shadows. A good candidate for phacoemulsification surgery, this procedure would extract the cataracts and an artificial lens would be placed in the eyes, allowing him to have near normal vision. However, the cost of the surgery had to be taken into account.
Second Chance Pet Adoptions’ Director, Lisa Imhof, said “Although we wanted Billy to have his sight, we would need to find a way to fund the procedure, without taking anything away from the other animals in the program”. Private donors opened their hearts to help Billy and he gained a following. But shortly before he was to have his surgery, he developed a life threatening urinary blockage, which required an extensive urinary surgery and a subsequent surgical procedure. “Everything was on hold until we could be sure little Billy would survive. It was touch and go for a little while”, said Imhof. His long road to recovery required months of care battling the unusual MRSA infection he had. Saving his life had become the priority and had definitely strained the donated funds previously slated for the eye surgery.
Fortunately, Second Chance Pet Adoptions received a grant from Lil BUB’s Big Fund for the ASPCA, a unique program and partnership started in 2014 by Lil Bub and the ASPCA, which distributes funds for special needs pets. This grant enabled Billy to have his cataract procedure, and on October 12th, 2015 Billy finally received the gift of sight. “His post operative course has been amazing and it is a treat to watch him see the world through new eyes. Everyone has been rooting for him from the beginning. We are so grateful for the outpouring of love and generosity for this wonderful cat”, said Imhof.

SECOND CHANCE PET ADOPTIONS AND SHIRLEY’S ANIMAL MINISTRY TEAMED UP WITH ATHLETES FOR ANIMALS TO RECEIVE GRANT

Second Chance Pet Adoptions and Shirley’s Animal Ministry teamed up with Athletes For Animals to receive a grant to spay, neuter, and vaccinate  low income and homeless cats and dogs. The grant was awarded last summer and the work has just been completed.

Dave Ballesteros, president of the Second Chance board of directors said, “Second Chance is pleased to work in collaboration with Shirley’s Animal Ministry.  Through this project, made possible by a grant from athletes for animals, more than 70 dogs and cats were neutered, spayed and vaccinated.  Working with our animal rescue partners will help us in our quest to eliminate the pet overpopulation issue in our community.”

Shirley Phillips of Shirley’s Animal Ministry added, “I am thankful to athletes for animals for funding this cooperative project.  It allowed me to work on the backlog of requests and recruit low-income folks needing spay/neuter services for their animals.”
