The 2017 Racing for Rescues event features:
• Separate, timed 5K races for runners with dogs and runners without dogs
• A 2K walk for people with or without dogs
• A special 30th anniversary “family reunion” for Second Chance adoptees
• Fantastic raffle prizes (need not be present to win)
• A vendor city of interest to pet owners and athletes alike

Race Day Information

Early Packet Pick-Up

Packets may be picked up in advance from Fleet Feet Sports on Wade Avenue in Raleigh on Friday, May 5, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Can’t make it? No sweat–you can get it on race day. 🙂

The event is happening on MRC Plaza on NCSU’s Centennial Campus. The address of the Monteith Research Center is 2410 Campus Shore Dr. in Raleigh. There is a parking deck located directly beneath the Plaza and we will have parking assistants and signs directing you to the proper location. Parking is free; see the attached photo of the building and deck below the plaza as you begin to turn into the deck.

From Avent Ferry Road:
Turn southeast onto Varsity Drive into Centennial Campus. Make a right on Main Campus Drive. Make a final right turn on Campus Shore Drive and enter the first parking deck on your right.

From Lake Wheeler Road:
Turn onto Centennial Parkway into Centennial Campus (you can only turn one direction, toward the Farmers’ Market). Make a left on Achievement Drive. Turn right onto Main Campus Drive. Make a final left turn on Campus Shore Drive and enter the first parking deck on your right.

Approximate course maps for both the 5K runs and the 2K walk are here. Please do not be alarmed that the mileage isn’t exactly correct–these are approximations and the traffic cones and course navigators in place the day of the event will mark the correct mileage for you. We have these maps here so you can get a pretty good sense of the course in advance. 🙂

Timing of the Events

Registration will open at 9:00 a.m. on May 7. If you do not pick up your packet at Fleet Feet, please claim your goody bag and, if applicable, event t-shirt from the registration table upon your arrival. The 5K runners without dogs will take off at 10:00 a.m, so make sure you are registered by 9:45 am or you make not make the start time! The 5K runners with dogs will take off at 10:05 a.m. The 2K walkers (with and without dogs, together) will take off at 10:45 a.m. Race awards will begin at 11:00 a.m., while fundraising and raffle prizes will be given starting at 11:30 a.m. The event will conclude at 12:00 p.m.

Food, Photos and Merchandise


Second Chance will have food tables at the event stocked with water, coffee, and juice, as well as bagels, fruit, granola and energy bars, donuts, and more. For the first time, we also have a doggy food truck at this event selling treats for your pup!

As we kick off our 30th anniversary celebration with a Family Reunion, we will be providing Family Tree bulletin boards for you to enjoy looking at. If you’ve ever adopted an animal from Second Chance, we’d love for you to bring a photo of the animal for the board. 🙂

Photo and Video Booths

As we commemorate our 30 years with the Family Reunion, we’ve got a photo booth and video booth for you to have some fun with!

Glover will be taking photos of people (and their pets, of course!) that can be downloaded after the event on the Second Chance Facebook page or purchased at the event (the photo, with your names, will be printed onto a unique tin plate “picture frame”). Make sure to get your picture snapped and fill out your order form (for frame orders, cash, checks, and cards all accepted).

Meanwhile, over in the video booth, share your Second Chance story–how did you first become involved with us? How long have you been volunteering with us? How did we help you create or complete your family with a fur baby? What’s your favorite memory of a Second Chance event? At the end of the summer, we’ll debut the video and you’ll really enjoy finding yourself in it!

Merchandise and Bandannas

We’ve got all-new merchandise to celebrate our 30th anniversary. Each printed with a special logo, enjoy t-shirts and hoodies, backpacks, dog leashes and collapsible water bowls, coffee mugs, water bottles, and travel mugs. Merchandise can be purchased at the event with cash, checks, and credit/debit cards. Don’t forget–each dog in attendance also receives a free bandanna! 🙂

Note for Those with Dogs

Please plan to use short (4-6 feet) leashes. For safety reasons, please do NOT bring your dogs on retractable leashes. All dog owners must be able to provide proof of rabies vaccination if necessary (tag or certificate). As always, please plan to clean up after your dogs!

While raffle tickets can still be purchased online, they will also be sold at the event (cash, checks, and cards all accepted). Stop by the raffle table to take your chance at winning a Wilmington getaway, nights out on the town, and more!

Every $ raised helps to support the animals in our program.  While some of the animals require medical care and surgery, all will incur routine costs such as food ($15-$40 depending on size), vaccinations ($15-20), de-wormer ($12 to over $50 for very large dogs).  All of our animals are spayed or neutered when adopted, with costs for cats and dogs ranging up to $159. Any funds you raise will allow us to help even more homeless dogs and cats in our community to find their forever home!

We’re celebrating 30 years of of helping pets find their forever families! Join us at the 2017 Racing for Rescues event for our first Second Chance Family Reunion. If you’ve ever adopted a pet through Second Chance, made a donation, volunteered with us, or attended an event, you are an important part of the Second Chance family. We hope you’ll join us! Dogs will be given special bandanas and we encourage everyone to bring photos of your Second Chance cats and dogs – past and present – for our wall!
