Meet Our New Dog Program Manager, Laura Honeycutt!

Laura grew up in Wake Forest, NC, and her first love (other than her parents and sister) was her pet dachshund, Kappy. Even now, at 29, she asks if she can pet every dog she sees. Laura studied Economics & Entrepreneurship at UNC-Wilmington, then served in the Peace Corps in Nicaragua as a Small Business Volunteer. It was there that she started rescuing dogs after seeing so many street dogs in need. Laura adopted 4 dogs while living in Nicaragua and brought home 10 foster dogs when her service was over in 2014. After struggling to find good homes for her fosters, she joined Franklin County Humane Society, who took in all 10 and found forever homes for them. Since then, Laura has fostered for FCHS and, in 2015, became Dog Team Leader. While fostering dogs, she worked as a bi-lingual Employment Specialist at the U.S. Committee for Refugees & Immigrants. Since jumping head first into rescue, she’s dreamed of finding a full-time job dedicated to saving dogs and is ecstatic that her dream has come true with Second Chance!

SAVE LIVES WHILE SAVING MONEY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON–AND IT’S FREE TO YOU!

Like Santa, we know you are also making a list and checking it twice–so did you know your list can do twice the good? You can bring joy to your recipient and to a homeless cat or dog this winter by taking advantage of free-to-you donations!

Getting a lot of goodies from Amazon? Great–start with a Smile and select Second Chance as your charity of choice, and Amazon will send money our way on your behalf!

Got fur babies on your list? Place your first order with Chewy’s by starting at this link, and the company will send $20 (enough to give a new kitten all their vaccines!) to Second Chance at no additional cost to you! (Psst–that’s a year-round opportunity, too!)

Hitting up the local stores for Small Business Saturday? When you purchase The Pet Pantry‘s custom-blended pet foods for the first time, you can designate Second Chance to receive a donation based on your purchases through their H.E.A.L. program! They’ll donate 7% of all purchases to Second Chance for as long as you are a Pet Pantry customer.

Need a neat “experience” gift? Consider a cheese-making class! Purchase a gift certificate or sign up for Second Act Artisan Cheese‘s Basic Cheese Making Fundamentals and they will donate $25 to Second Chance! Use coupon code SCPA2017 when you sign up on their website.

Save the date: from December 4 through 17, Second Chance will be running a virtual Clever Container fundraiser! We’ll tell you more soon all about how to view and order items online to benefit our animals!

These are just some of the ways you can help our animals–for free–while getting your shopping done! There are even more ideas on this page, so check them out and feel great about your gift-giving this year!

IT’S TRUE WHAT THEY SAY: AGE IS JUST A NUMBER. DON’T BELIEVE US? THIS IS GABIE’S STORY…

“Anyone who says older cats are boring and too old to play is dead wrong.

Adopting our 11-12 year old kitty, Seo (formerly Clay), has been one of the best decisions of our life. He is playful, he is silly, he is SO lovey, and other than waking us up all hours of the night, he is purrfect. He sleeps between Stephen and me on the bed or on our laps while relaxing on the couch, he has never made a mess in our apartment, he plays, and even though he gets in the heat of battle, he never aims to hurt us. He knows when I’m upset or hurting and comforts me, he keeps me company while Stephen works, and he loves on him as soon as he gets home.

Something told me when I met him at the shelter that he saw me andhow much I needed him. I visited him as much as I could before we got approved and cried for him because he was so stressed from being checked out by doctors and prepped for adoption.

He was at the shelter for around 2 years and finally got his furever home to live the rest of his life in luxury and comfort and around people that love him unconditionally. Thank you, Second Chance, for all that you do for all the animals you care for, for always doing your best to make difficult times easier on all the fur babies, and for giving us our chance to be with Seo.

P.S. – He is a total super model.”

Interested in a senior kitty of your own? Boogie is waiting for his forever family! Might it be you?

Holiday Guests Coming Over? You Set the Table–We’ll Wash the Dog!

This Sat., Nov. 18 and on Sat., Dec. 16, from 11:00 to 3:00, our Second Chance volunteers will be raising money for homeless animals with a dog wash! Bring your pup to Unleashed on Creedmoor and we’ll clean ’em right up for ya!

Lions, Heroes, and Cows–Barks ‘n Brews Photos Are Up!

Whether spooky or silly, we had a blast with the pups and their people who came out to Raleigh Brewing on Oct. 29! Thanks to the brewery, our guests, the Curry in a Hurry truck, Redd Waggin, and Luna’s Little Boutique (and–of course–our volunteers!), a great time was had by all and we’ve got the photos to prove it! Check them out!
