Second Chance board members Shelby Hunt and Nick Costa are having a baby–and his name is in YOUR hands! Read on for a few words from these crazy generous pet-parents-turning-human-parents before you make your way to the ballot box (the form below):

Friends, family, Second Chance family, and animal lovers all around,

Help us name our new puppy, I mean, child!

We have together adopted two dogs and a cat and fostered numerous others during our past six years with Second Chance Pet Adoptions. We have never struggled to name a four-legged friend, but we are now becoming parents of the two-legged variety, and boy oh boy (see what I did there?), we are finding it much more difficult to settle on the right name.

We’ve narrowed it down to a final-five list: in alphabetical order, Austin, Colt, Cooper, Ford, and Kirk. As is tradition in the Costa family, the baby will get Dad’s first name as his middle name (Nicholas), and the baby will have Costa as his last name.

Help us fix our indecision and save animals at the same time! Throw in your two cents, er… $5 (per vote).

Don’t you just hate when someone tells you their kid’s name and you think, Who the heck thought this was a good idea? Now is your chance to weigh in and avoid such a feeling! Each vote is $5 to the animals at Second Chance. Please feel free to vote as many times as you want!

Votes will be counted between now and 10:00 a.m. Eastern on February 18, and the winning name will be announced at Shelby’s baby shower on February 19.

The little dude is due April 10. Nick, Shelby, Kai, Bodhi, and Mila are very excited… Kai and Bodhi are mostly excited for the increase in food to be dropped on the floor and Mila for a new person to shadow box with! We at Second Chance are excited, too, for all the new homeless animals our staff and volunteers will get to rescue thanks to this baby-naming contest and YOUR vote today!

FEBRUARY 6 UPDATE: As promised, we’re sharing the rankings as of noon Eastern on Mon., Feb. 6! Cooper’s in the lead with 63 votes, followed by Colt with 39 votes, Austin with 28 votes, Kirk with 27 votes, and Ford with 16 votes. (Additionally, 24 votes have generally been cast for the “no matter to me, I just want to save lives!” option, which we appreciate!) Not seeing your favorite in the lead? You can cast as many more votes as you’d like to displace the other names! The competition is just heating up!

FEBRUARY 13 UPDATE: Second and final update before the big reveal this weekend! Cooper’s been knocked out of first place and Colt has taken over with 81 votes! Cooper is still hanging in second place with a solid 76 votes. Ford has really come from behind and now has 46 votes, followed by Austin with 38 and Kirk with 32. The voting ends this weekend, so make sure to line up your favorites now!

How It Works:

By 10:00 a.m. Eastern on February 18, cast your vote(s) for the baby name(s) of your choice.
You can vote as many times as you’d like; each vote is a tax-deductible donation to stray and abandoned dogs (like Fenway) and cats (like Penelope) who need their second chances to find love.
Votes will be tallied on February 18; the rankings will be shared on February 6 and 13, and the winning name will be announced at Shelby and Nick’s February 19 baby shower.
Nick and Shelby’s goal is to raise at least $1,000. If reached, they promise to stick to the vote winner. If the goal is not met, please consider your vote a pure donation and Shelby may make her own decision. UPDATE: threshold met!
