Second Chance Pet Adoptions, Triangle’s Oldest No-Kill Rescue,

Receives Facility Upgrade Thanks to Petco Foundation Grant.

Grant of $3,250 instrumental in installation of FRP, increasing sanitation in community cat rooms.

Second Chance Pet Adoptions was selected by the Petco Foundation to receive a grant of $3,250 for much-needed facility upgrades. This is the third time the Petco Foundation has funded upgrades to the facility; in both 2011 and 2016, the Petco Foundation granted funding for new cat condos that increased our capacity to rescue more cats, made the cats housed within the condos more attractive to adopters, and decreased the time and effort required to sanitize the building.

Now, in 2018, Second Chance’s intake and adoption numbers will increase again thanks to the Petco Foundation’s partnership with us, as we have just installed fiber reinforced plastic—commonly called FRP—on the walls of the cageless community rooms in which our adult cats live. Commonly used in hospitals, FRP is significantly easier to clean than drywall, reducing the risk that disease will spread. When a cat becomes ill, they must be removed from the adoption floor and return to the “medical hold” ward, no longer available for adoption until they are healthy again. While we are proud to prioritize the health of our animals, each move back to medical hold delays adoptions and takes up space that could be occupied by new cats at intake. Reducing illness in the facility will reward us with more adoptions, room for more new cats, an increase in the quality of life for the cats in the facility, and more efficient use of volunteer time during morning cleanings. As a perk, the FRP unifies the appearance of each room, is easier to maintain than drywall, and will help ensure that we continue to pass our building inspections with flying colors.

At Second Chance, our ultimate goal is to save as many lives as possible, a goal shared by the Petco Foundation. Since Second Chance began in 1987, we have rescued over 13,000 animals. This is in part thanks to the ongoing support we have received from the Petco Foundation and Petco in Cary, NC (Crossroads).

About the Petco Foundation (www.petcofoundation.org)

At the Petco Foundation, we believe that every animal deserves to live its best life.  Since 1999, we’ve invested more than $200 million in lifesaving animal welfare work to make that happen. With our more than 4,000 animal welfare partners, we inspire and empower communities to make a difference by investing in adoption and medical care programs, spay and neuter services, pet cancer research, service and therapy animals, and numerous other lifesaving initiatives. Through our Think Adoption First program, we partner with Petco stores and animal welfare organizations across the country to increase pet adoptions. So far, we’ve helped more than 5.5 million pets find their new loving families, and we’re just getting started. Visit petcofoundation.org to learn more about how you can get involved.
